It played a very important role in the local economy, having been one of its main means of communication.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the fact that, in the past, the Douro was a dangerous river and very difficult to navigate, where only rabelo boats were able to circulate to transport the barrels of Port wine, after the construction of several dams it became more navigable, with greater flow, which allowed the proliferation of cruises and tourist trips.<\/p>\n<p>Owner of a unique and breathtaking landscape, the High Douro wine region was considered by UNESCO as a <em>World Heritage Site<\/em>, in the category of cultural landscape.<\/p>\n<p>Located at the north end of Castelo de Paiva, the Douro River is part of the county&#8217;s history and bathes some of its greatest natural shrouded in legends of tunnels and nobles, the <strong>Island of Loves<\/strong> is one of the nature <em>ex libris<\/em> of the region. A small desert island in the middle of <strong>Douro<\/strong> where the isolation made the native vegetation remain almost intact with imposing and old pines, oaks, olive trees, ash, alders, reeds and tamarisks. Douro with several old houses and properties, that go up the
