In our opinion as local experts, we recommend starting early in the morning so that the route can be completed calmly and also to avoid the torrid afternoon heat (during the summer).

While it is unanimous that the easiest route will be to start in Areinho (to avoid climbing the monumental stairs), it is also certain that when starting the route on the other side – in Espiunca – you will finish it in apotheosis as you will see the stairs getting closer and closer and, finally, after climbing all the steps, you will be able to contemplate the landscape with a feeling of “duty accomplished”, before crossing the 516 Arouca Bridge.

Regardless of the direction of the route you choose, make a stop halfway through – at Vau beach – to cool off in the river and contemplate the tranquility of the shade of this river sand.

Most visitors choose to take the Walkways in one direction only, so if you leave your car at one end, at the end you can take one of the many taxis or transfers that are always available.

© Altimetry of the Paiva Walkways by Vagamundos.pt

Accessibility: Who is it suitable for?

Anyone can walk along the Paiva Walkways, as long as they respect the safety rules and conduct indicated at the ends, in Espiunca and Areinho. Enjoy the rest of the afternoon in Nature and visit some parts of the Arouca Geopark (part of the UNESCO network) and Serra da Freita. In the late afternoon, head to the picturesque Historic Center where you can still catch a glimpse of the Arouca Monastery, an important monument dating back to the 12th century.
